MARKET PASSAGE, ST LEONARDS




This 1873 O.S. map shows the narrow alleyway known as Market Passage. It lays parallel to and behind Grand Parade - the seafront road lined with homes for the wealthy. The homes in Market Passage were tiny and overcrowded. Among the households here in 1881 were the following large families.


No. 2 - Couple and 9 children aged 6m to 12 years
No. 3 - Couple and 7 children aged 10m to 11 years
No. 4 - Couple and 7 children aged 1 to 11 years
No. 7 - Couple and 5 children aged 1 to 10 years
No. 8 - Couple and 4 children aged 2 to 15 years
No.11 - Couple and 4 children aged 13 to 25 years
No.15 - Couple and 6 children aged 1 to 15 years






Market Passage today, looking east. The fifteen tiny tenements were on the right. They have all been demolished.
